We needed to do better. So we did.

by Jordy, co-founder Ateljé

Yara and I started this journey five years ago. At our kitchen table, a bag of pearls and an idea. We believed accessories could be more fun. Everyday essentials, like a phone case or cord, that still matched your personality, that felt like you. Little did we know the adventure we were embarking on.

Many ups, of course. But also some downs.

We started with a fashion idea, but the product we chose turned out to be anything but simple. Different phone sizes, different producers, technical specifications we had never dealt with before. And we wanted everything to be exactly right. The exact shade of colour we had in our heads, the exact bead, the exact finish. And so it became what it became: an adventure of trial and error. Improving, improving, improving.

The road wasn't always smooth. We had hurdles along the way. Cords that would break, products that lost their shine after a few months, rings that bent out of shape too soon. Real issues, experienced by real customers. And for a brand that believes your phone case is the most visible accessory you own, that's not something we take lightly.

So we did the work. I can't recall how many meetings, emails and calls I had with our producers. All the testing, all the back and forth, all the specific details I can now tell you about something as simple as a thread. But we learned. And we got better. And I want to take you through what we changed, because you were part of this journey whether you knew it or not.

And the results are what we hoped for. We're proud of what we make today, and we're not stopping here.

How we strengthened the cord connection

The connection between the hook and the cord was one of our biggest weak points. We were using two crimp beads to secure it. Standard, but not strong enough for the way people actually use their phones every day. We worked with an industrial design agency to redesign the connection entirely. We now use a knotting technique with a gold filled bead over it. The difference in strength is significant.

Why our gold coating now actually lasts

Gold that stops looking like gold is not gold worth having. Our previous coating faded faster than it should have. We switched to a gold filled coating that holds considerably better over time. Your cord stays looking the way it did on day one.

Stronger phone cords: what we changed inside

The inner wire is what gives a cord its strength. Ours wasn't strong enough. We upgraded to a heavier gauge wire so that under normal daily use, cords last considerably longer than before.

"We learned. And we got better"

Better phone cord hooks, fewer dropped phones

Our previous hooks had a small protruding button that would occasionally catch on fabric or the lining of a bag and pull your phone straight off the cord. The new hooks have a cleaner profile, carry our logo, and that specific problem is now rare rather than regular.

More durable rings on our phone cases

The rings on our cases were deforming too quickly under daily use. We've switched to a stronger ring that holds its shape better. It still happens occasionally, we won't pretend otherwise, but the difference is real.

Longer-lasting colour on our phone cases

Cases were discolouring faster than we wanted. We've improved the finish layer so what you buy now stays much closer to what you saw when you ordered it.

We're not perfect. We know that. But we are constantly working to be better in every way we can. If you have feedback, ideas, or something you think we should know: drop us a line. Seriously. Some of the best improvements we've made started with a message from a customer who cared enough to tell us something wasn't right.

Thank you for being part of this. For sticking with us through the learning curve. This is the version of Ateljé we always wanted to build.
